Obstacles to development: WATER

BBC CLIP

Not only are the problems with access to water but access to CLEAN water is also an issue. We take access to clean drinking water and sanitation for granted - but there are still an estimated 1.1 billion people in the world without access to safe water and 2.5 billion without access to safe toilets.

Increasing the quantity of water available?

Follow the links from the Practical Action website to explain how Water Harvesting, Drip Irrigation and Water Distillation can help to increase the quantity of water avaliable to poor communities.

You can choose how to present your work - but you must explain how each scheme works and its BENEFITS.

Water harvesting is one solution from Practical Action:

In dry areas of southern Sri Lanka, Practical Action has enabled villagers to collect and use the available rains as efficiently as possible.

Facilities installed have included both above and below ground rainwater catchment tanks, with the water collected from roofs of buildings, dams and channels for irrigation purposes, and improvement of ponds used for storing water.

The villagers themselves have usually expressed a clear need for improving water collection and storage provision. The water facilities are usually largely built by the villagers themselves with some assistance from trained masons or builders. People consider obtaining improved access to water well worth the building effort.

What can we do?
